The Daily Operation Of
Bostick Plantation
Executive Lodge
As you can imagine, managing a 10,000 acre Plantation that offers hunting 365 days a year is quite an operation. Our large staff of very experienced and qualified guides are called on to do just about everything.
Every morning, the guides are up around 4:00 am to get the hunters up for the hunt and visit with them as they enjoy hot coffee and danish. The guides are responsible for making sure that their hunters are ready and loaded into the truck in time to get them to their stands well before first light. That gives the woods time to settle down before shooting light.
After the guides return from taking the hunters to the stands, it is time for the hard work to begin. They will spend their early morning hours working in areas of the Plantation that are being rested from hunting pressure that day. You will find them planting fields, inspecting and repairing stands, limbing trees, clearing shooting lanes, filling feeders, putting out bait, working on roads, etc.
Around 10:30 am, it's time for the guides to go pick up all of their hunters and the game they have harvested. Sometimes, they may have to take the hunters back to the lodge, load up the dogs, and go back to that morning's hunting area to trail a wounded animal. Nonetheless, while the hunters are feasting on a fabulous southern home cooked meal, the guides will be out working again. They will go into the areas that will be hunted that afternoon and make sure that there is plenty of fresh feed put out for every stand that will be used that evening.
And, while you are taking that afternoon nap or double-checking your rifle scope, what do you think your guides are doing. That's right. Working on the Plantation. They will be taking care of the morning's kills, feeding the dogs, cleaning the dog pens, hauling off trash, repairing equipment, cleaning the trucks our hunters ride in or finishing up what they didn't get done that morning.
Then, about 4 hours before dark, the guides will pick up all of their hunter's and take them to their stands for the afternoon hunt. If they are lucky, the guides might get to take a short nap while the hunters are in their stands. After shooting light has vanished, our guides will pick up all of the hunters and their kills and take everyone back to the lodge for an evening feast. Sometimes these guys will have to go back, look for game and will not get back in until midnight. Then, they have to process all of the animals and put them in the walk-in coolers. That could take them until 1:00 or 2:00 am. That's about 2 hours before they will be waking you up for the next day's hunt.
Everyone always seems to think that being a guide is the perfect job. But, it's far from it. Our guides do it because they love it. They love meeting new people and trying to make each and everyone of them feel at home and enjoy their stay with us. They also enjoy sharing the excitement of our guests when they kill their first deer, their first turkey, or that trophy of a lifetime. Believe me, these guys could not do everything that's required of them unless they truly loved being a guide for Bostick Plantation.
